The Stables project involved the complete ground-floor renovation of a classic 19th-century English cottage in Knutsford, Cheshire. Originally built as a gamekeeper’s cottage on the Tabley estate, the property’s existing layout suffered from poor space planning and limited flow. Our brief was to redesign the ground floor layout, modify the entrances, and deliver a “wow factor” while seamlessly blending the home’s period charm with modern design.
Key updates included the creation of a new main entrance, hallway, and kitchen porch, alongside a bespoke kitchen design and a reconfiguration of the dining and living rooms. A striking new oak staircase and a custom double-sided chimney with a log burner were introduced to maximize functionality and enhance the cottage’s character. Every detail, from the exposed brick walls to the carefully chosen finishes, celebrates the home’s heritage while embracing contemporary living.
The reimagined layout drastically improves the flow of the cottage, making the most of its existing footprint without the need for an extension. By thoughtfully mixing old and new, the design balances rustic charm with modern elegance, creating a warm and inviting home that perfectly suits the client’s lifestyle.
