Smart technology should feel invisible. When it’s designed with the interior from day one, lights, sound and screens simply support the space—no clutter, no friction. Below is how we approach automation, with a recent example at The Colony, Wilmslow, delivered in collaboration with our trusted partner Connected Installation.
Why integrate automation with interior design?
- Calm, considered environments: scenes for morning, meetings and evenings—set once, used daily.
- Cleaner aesthetics: fewer visible switches and boxes; technology sits behind the design, not in front of it.
- Energy & security: schedules mimic occupancy, reduce wasted power and enhance peace of mind.
Case study: The Colony, Wilmslow
For the top-floor lounge and foyer we created a simple, elegant system that “just happens” for the client’s day:
- Automated start-up (07:45): TVs power on to Bloomberg at low volume for a calm lounge arrival.
- Coordinated lighting scenes: smart lighting aligns with usage—welcoming in the morning, focused during the day, softer for evening events.
- Background audio: distributed speakers in foyer, corridors and WCs provide consistent ambience during working hours.
- Effortless shut-down (18:00): systems power down at close of business to save energy and reset the space.
Everything is controlled within a single app—lights, audio and video—so the interior feels curated, not complicated.
What this looks like day-to-day
- Scenes, not switches: one tap sets lighting, audio and displays for the task at hand.
- Remote control: change scenes or turn lights off from anywhere.
- Schedules: spaces appear occupied when required; everything is ready before the first arrival.
Benefits for homes & workplaces
- Residential: mood lighting, whole-home audio, discreet cinema and app control that merges with the interiors.
- Commercial: consistent brand ambience, low cognitive load for teams and better energy management.
Typical components we specify
- Smart lighting with pre-programmed scenes (welcome, task, presentation, event)
- Distributed audio for background music and zoned control
- Presentation & lounge displays with scene-based sources
- Simple wall keypads where needed, with primary control via app
When to involve us
Best results come when interior design, lighting and control systems are planned together—ideally at concept stage. We coordinate layouts, cable paths, ventilation for AV equipment and finishes so technology remains invisible and serviceable.
Partner spotlight: Connected Installation
For The Colony we partnered with Connected Installation to deliver a reliable, maintainable system. Their team programmed scenes, schedules and app control, and can support ongoing maintenance contracts for total peace of mind.
